The Department of Health have released the first findings from the Health Survey carried out in 2018/19 in Northern Ireland. This survey included 3,593 participants aged 16 and over, with questions relating to general health, mental health and wellbeing, antibiotics, obesity, smoking, drinking alcohol, and sexual health.
Findings included:
- 25% of adults are obese with a further 37% classed as overweight
- 19% of children aged 2-15 are overweight with a further 8% obese
- 46% of adults reported eating the recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day (39% in most deprived areas; 48% in least deprived areas)
While overweight and obesity appears to have remained static when compared to the first survey undertaken in 2010/11, fruit and vegetable consumption has risen according to findings.
