Event overview

Childhood obesity continues to be a major health issue on the island of Ireland. This event looks at our children’s basic right to health, specifically to the prevention of obesity and its’ lifelong health and wellbeing complications. Obesity continues to be a priority health issue on the island of Ireland. A rights based approach emphasises our fundamental entitlement to a healthy diet and a health promoting society.

Speakers include Dr Nathalie Farpour Lambert, President of the European Association for the Study on Obesity, Dr Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children, Dr Aoife Brinkley, Senior Clinical Psychologist, Children’s Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin and Ms Lindsay Graham, Child Food Poverty Policy Advisor. Dr Nathalie Farpour Lambert will be opening the workshop and introducing us into the ever increasing health consequences of childhood obesity. Dr Muldoon will set the scene on the rights of the child to a safe, healthy diet and physical activity. Dr Brinkley will highlight the concerns of health professionals in raising the issue of childhood obesity with children and parents. And lastly, Dr Graham will explore health inequalities and the breaking down of barriers to changing social norms around childhood obesity.

Dr Niall MuldoonDr Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for children 

Dr Niall Muldoon is Ireland’s second Ombudsman for Children. Niall, who is a clinical and counselling psychologist and was previously Director of Investigations at the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO), was appointed by President Michael D Higgins on February 17, 2015. The OCO is an independent office that investigates complaints about services provided to children by public organisations. As Ombudsman for Children Niall has focused on generating an Ireland where children and young people are actively heard, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

The Office has developed resources to support other organisations to promote children’s rights including A Guide to Child Centred Complaint Handling and Good Practice for Children’s Participation in Decision Making.
