About our research

We conduct research to address gaps in scientific knowledge related to food safety, food hygiene, nutrition and communications.

Research is a key part of our mission to improve public health by promoting food safety and healthy eating on the island of Ireland.

We ensure our research is of the highest quality, science-based and relevant to both public health and the agrifood industry across the island of Ireland.

Our research is divided into 3 areas: Food Safety, Nutrition and Communications. The research is conducted through one of these approaches:

  • Field research
  • Market research
  • Cost of healthy food basket
  • Food Reviews

Field research

Our field research covers the entire food chain and provides clear, independent and reliable insights to inform policymaking. Since 2000, we have commissioned over 145 projects.

We identify critical knowledge gaps in food safety, food hygiene, and nutrition, offering evidence-based recommendations. Additionally, we investigate domestic food safety practices that may contribute to foodborne illnesses.

Market research

We developed Safetrak to evaluate the effectiveness of our public health campaigns. It is a consumer research programme that measures public awareness of our campaigns, along with food related concerns, and their impact on consumer behaviour.

The Safetrak research is conducted using a CAPI face-to-face methodology, except in 2020 when the research was undertaken using a telephone methodology due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cost of a healthy food basket

This research examines the cost of a healthy food basket for 6 sample household types. Since 2014, it has been conducted biennially in Ireland and Northern Ireland [link to other food basket].

The research examines the food element of the Minimum Essential Budget Standards (MESL) which sets a baseline below which no individual or household should be expected to live.

The research is based on a methodology called Consensual Budget Standards (CBS). The reports are presented in the context of food poverty and increasing numbers of people who don’t have enough money to buy healthy food.

Food reviews

Safefood conducts or commissions reviews of food ingredients or nutritional content of food products, or food outlets, to empower people to make informed food choices. These analyses often incorporate insights into public perceptions of the products.
