  • When the power goes out or your kitchen is flooded, food safety becomes crucial to prevent foodborne illnesses. Follow these guidelines to keep your food safe during emergencies.

  • Cooking meat properly is important to kill the bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

  • Vegetables can be exposed to bacteria through soil or water.

  • Beef, poultry, eggs and raw milk all can carry Salmonella bacteria.

  • Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning on the island of Ireland.

  • Listeria can be present in raw, chilled, ready-to-eat foods and ready meals. It is especially dangerous for pregnant women and other vulnerable groups.
     

  • Many strains of E. coli are harmless to humans, but some can cause serious illness.
